Tutor, Mentor, and High School Student: A Patient Helper Making a Difference

By Shaele Wood

Claire Moore, a senior at Albemarle High School, is a confident, quiet and passionate young woman who lights up when she talks about “Tyrone,” the young man whom she tutors at Charlottesville Abundant Life Ministries (CALM). She describes Tyrone as “goofy… a sweet kid with a good sense of humor.” She’s proud of the way he has opened up to her, trusted her and that they have developed a strong relationship. It is obvious that she is more than a tutor; she is his mentor and his friend.

It wasn’t always this easy for Tyrone. Claire’s supervisor recalls a host of behavior problems that exhausted two prior adult volunteers. “However, under Claire’s persistence, encouragement, patience, and firmness, Tyrone has settled down and has made noticeable progress in his behavior and his work.” Claire is the only volunteer (including the adult volunteers) who tutors twice per week. She has volunteered with the after-school tutoring program since 2002.

CALM is a partnership with the Prospect Avenue neighborhoods and is located in the Blue Ridge Commons Apartment complex. Volunteers provide tutoring, mentoring and spiritual guidance for the youth served by Abundant Life.
